What is Tantra?
Tantra is a spiritual tradition from India, over 1500 years old! The teachings integrate body, mind and spirit in the path towards enlightenment. Unlike other paths that seek to transcend the physical world, Tantra finds liberation within it.
In contemporary discussions, you'll often hear about "Classical Tantra" and "Neo Tantra." Classical Tantra, includes various yogic practices outlined in texts known as 'Tantras,’ aiming to elevate consciousness and achieve spiritual liberation. Neo-Tantra emerged in the early 1900s in the West, often emphasising the cultivation of erotic energy through sacred sexuality practices, which sometimes diverge from traditional Tantric philosophy. Even though this is just a part of Neo Tantra, it is often what people assume Neo Tantra to be focusing on due to lack of education or understanding.
Why is Tantra Relevant Today?
Tantra's teachings are particularly relevant today, as they were originally developed for householders—people who balance worldly responsibilities with a desire for spiritual growth. Tantra teaches that every aspect of life, from sexuality to mundane tasks such as cooking, can be part of a spiritual practice. It challenges the notion that spiritual and worldly lives are separate, demonstrating that they can be harmoniously integrated. This approach can be challenging when dealing with worldly desires, which is why a yogic practices is relevant to keep alignment and direct the energy accordingly.
